A Day in the Life
Our rhythms follow the children’s rhythms! We open Nurturing Hearts at 7.30am and prepare each area for work/play, caregiving spaces such as the Kai area’s, bathrooms and the bedroom.
In the mornings, our first meal time begins with morning tea between 9 and 9:30am followed by lunch between 11am and 12pm. The children dine in small groups to ensure this is a peaceful enjoyable time.
Nappy changes happen throughout the day as required and are recorded on the chart in the bathroom. We promote independence for all children and nappy changing is an opportunity to work in partnership with the child. In almost all cases nappy changes are performed in a standing position as this assists the childs natural transition to the toilet.
After the lunch meal, some children will sleep for an hour or so. This process happens in response to the child’s natural cues and is undertaken in small groups of 4-5 children to ensure this transition is peaceful and calm. Rest time allows children to relax and recharge their bodies and their brains in preparation for more work in the afternoon.
As children wake Kaitiaki watch for their cues and start to prepare the afternoon tea space from around 2:00pm. We meet again for a snack around 4:30pm for those that stay later.
